How Many Puppies Can a English Bulldog Have

English Bulldogs are one of the most popular breeds of dogs all over the world. This is why many are interested to know how many puppies an English Bulldog will have upon delivery as these puppies are in demand. Breeding them is very profitable. However, the American Kennel Club advises anyone who wishes to breed these dogs to be responsible breeders because they come with a lot of health risks. It can also be quite expensive and those who want to breed their English Bulldogs should be aware of these concerns to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
English Bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed. This is why they have short heads. But this condition leads to English Bulldogs experiencing respiratory problems manifested in their shortness of breath and lack of oxygen. It also affects their ability to cool down after strenuous activity and some English Bulldogs collapse due to lack of oxygen. When an English Bulldog does get pregnant, they mostly require to undergo a C-section when they give birth as it would be hard for their puppies’ heads to fit into their mom’s birth canal.

When to breed your English Bulldog
Female English Bulldogs reach sexual maturity when they are around 6 to 9 months old. They go in heat for an average of 2 to 4 weeks and have an interval of 6 months. But before you get your English Bulldog impregnated, make sure you allow her to undergo a few cycles first before mating. At this stage in their lives, your pet is already fully developed, mature enough and ready for mating. This will also help ensure that your doggos are fine and healthy. Take note also that they should only be pregnant 2 to 3 times in their lifetime so as not to overexert their bodies and avoid further health complications. This is also to help give female English Bulldogs a good quality of life and take care of their well-being.

How many puppies will they have?
English Bulldogs have fewer puppies compared to other breeds of dogs. The average litter size of an English Bulldog is 3 to 4 puppies. There are some who have more pups in a litter but this presents a high risk for the puppies. They might have serious health issues and may not survive after birth. English Bulldogs have smaller hips and wombs that’s why their bodies don’t have the capacity to carry a larger number of litter and provide them with healthy development. Simply put, the smaller the body, the smaller the litter and this applies to English Bulldogs. They might have a smaller size of litters but it doesn’t mean that it’s easier for them. The bodies of English Bulldogs are not made for pregnancy. In fact, it is not easy to get them pregnant. They can only be impregnated via artificial insemination which is best done by a vet.
The entire process of pregnancy of English Bulldogs is delicate and would require constant consultations with your vet to ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Be with your dog throughout the process so that she can get all the support that she needs through it all.
