It can be intimidating with its stature and it doesn’t scare easily which makes it a great watchdog. They were even trained originally for hunting in the wild because of their potential. However, they can also be temperamental especially towards strangers when not properly trained. This is why it is mandatory for your Akira to go through proper training if you want it to reach its maximum potential as your friend, companion, and guard.
There were many ways to train an Akita and starting them as early as possible would be to your advantage. What you should know before starting though is that patience is a virtue and you should set your expectation early on that the journey wouldn’t be easy. Also, it should be kept in mind that the rate of progress in training varies across different Akitas that while one Akita could learn different tricks in a small amount of time, others do not.
One of the first things you need to do is to help them socialize. This is important because otherwise, you Akita could pose danger could risk not only your well-being but the people around you as well. Allow your Akita to be around not only humans but other animals as well on a daily basis. If you don’t live in a place that would expose your Akita to other people, then you can take your Akita for a walk regularly. Commend good behavior and chastise the bad ones. However, when you do the latter, make sure that you don’t use foul words and aggressive tone because this will make an impression on your Akita that would be more bad than good in the long run.
Other than socializing, you could also train your dog basic commands such as sit, stand, lie down, and rollover. Also, you’d want to potty train your Akita for convenience for both of you.
For best results, you should ensure that your Akita is in the best possible condition before teaching it the basics. An alert Akita provides a better response to training compared to a tired Akita. It would also do you good not to train your Akita immediately after meals or if you notice it a bit under the weather. Bottom line is to keep your Akita in the best possible condition before training for best results.
